Why Window Valances are Worth Buying
If you are on a budget you may think it is a waste of money buying valances for windows. After all, they do not give you privacy, shut out the morning light in your bedroom or keep the room warmer in winter like curtains. If you have to drop something from your home shopping list, then surely it can be valances?
While it is true that the only function of valances is a decorative one, they do make your windows quite special. It is the fact that they are not essential that gives your windows the edge. It means that not every Tom, Dick or Harry has them or even understands why they are useful.
If you consider certain valance styles for windows in your home, you will realize that they help set the tone of the room like nothing else. For example, you could have an empty room with plain windows, and a set of classic swags and tails alone would make the room look like a traditional living or dining room. Add a scarf valance in sheer muslin instead and the room is transformed into a romantic one. Change it again for a geometric shaped Ascot valance and you have a contemporary setting.
A valance marks your windows out as something different too, when they are nothing special in themselves. It provides an accent for the the windows along the top edge, something which curtains cannot do and makes a proper framework along with your curtains to draw attention to the window or view.
Curtains are just curtains, plain and simple : everyone has them, but a window valance turns curtains into a proper window treatment giving you the chance to add contrast colors and designs as trim and potentially use other colors from the room along with your curtain fabric to unify the color scheme.
