Types of drill bit material
No matter what you need a drill bit for, it needs to be hard enough to withstand the pressure and heat generated by the drilling motion. Because of this, there are many different kinds of drill bits made of different materials, depending on the job you want to get done. The most common material which is used to make drill bits is steel. This is because it’s strong, durable, and can stand up to heat and pressure in wood and metal pretty well. The type of steel used determines the purpose of the drill bit. Low carbon steel which is soft is generally used to drill into wood. This is the least expensive type of drill bit, because it doesn’t cost that much to make.
High carbon steel is used to drill into harder materials, like steel and concrete. This is because they can withstand the heat and the toughness of the material better than low carbon steel, which may cause problems if you’re trying to use a drill bit which is not designed to drill a particular kind of material. The hardest drill bit in the world is the poly crystalline diamond, which is used for any type of drilling you can imagine. The top quality diamond drill bits are expensive and should be used sparingly.
Aside from the material which drill bits are made of, you’ll also need to know about coatings. Coatings help protect the bit from damage while it performs its job. Teflon is a popular coating for drill bits, as it keeps the bit strong and resists heat as it works. There are other types of coating for different kinds of drill bits, depending on your need. You can also buy uncoated drill bits, but this is not recommended since steel can rust. Plus the quality of holes produced are not good at all.
