Pros and Cons of Using a Hard Sided Suitcase

Quality luggage offers the traveler the promise of a pleasant and rewarding travel experience. Yet too often a young, inexperienced traveler fails to appreciate the benefits that are associated with use of a hard sided suitcase. Today, as airport safety issues remain in the news, one advantage to the hard suitcase seems quite apparent.

While a hard sided suitcase has a sturdy, substantial covering, a soft sided suitcase fails to offer that same type of protection. In other words, if you pack something fragile into a soft sided suitcase, it could well get broken into bits during your trip. That same item would have remained well protected and unbroken, if it had been placed in a hard sided suitcase.

So, if you plan to go on a trip, then you should think hard about what items you are going to take with you. You should also give thought to the sort of abuse to which your suitcase might be subjected. Imagine all the places your bag will go, while you sit and wait to board a plane, or wait for your bag’s arrival.

Now there is no denying the fact that a hard sided suitcase weighs appreciably more than a soft sided piece of luggage. The typical hard suitcase has been designed from a hard plastic. While the weight of that hard plastic is not equivalent to a large, heavy weight, it is not “as light as a feather.” As a rule, hard sided suitcases are heavier than soft sided suitcases.

By the same token, if you are on a budget, then you can not afford to overlook the fact that a hard suitcase is generally more expensive than a soft sided suitcase. Of course that less expensive soft suitcase is going to get banged around just as much as any more expensive piece of luggage.

So, if you intend to travel a great distance, then you probably do not want to invite trouble. That means that you should not accept the added risk risk that is linked to the placement of fragile and valuable items in a soft sided suitcase. In order to derive the greatest amount of pleasure from your planned trip, you should obtain one of the sturdy, hard sided suitcases.
