Buying a Visco Elastic Foam Mattress
If you are in the market for a new mattress, you could spend hours researching the best kind to buy. Should you get an inner spring or a floating mattress or a visco elastic foam mattress (also know as memory foam)?
Save yourself the time and take my advice: buy a memory foam mattress. When it came time for me to replace my old mattress, I spent weeks deciding which kind to buy. I combed countless websites and bad back forums. I shopped at mattress stores and “tested” several different kinds of traditional mattresses. And I kept coming back to memory foam.
First, what is memory foam? As the technical name implies this is a foam that has viscosity and elasticity. What that means for the rest of the world is that it is “wetter” than traditional foam and it does feel kind of wet to the touch. The foam is reacting to your body heat. That is one of its amazing properties. The elasticity comes into play in how it reacts to your body weight. The cells of the foam compress and flatten. Traditional foam compressed with weight but it fights against staying compressed. That is why a traditional foam bed (like a camping pad) is so uncomfortable — you spend all night wrestling with your mattress. So again, the memory foam reacts to your heat and your weight so that you can get a good night’s sleep.
When I finally decided to pull the trigger and make the purchase, I went with an online company that makes their own memory foam. You don’t have to go to this length but I wanted to ensure the best quality mattress. I bought a queen mattress for $1,200. I know that seems like a lot of money, but that is a good price for the lifetime of the product.
While I was doing this research I also discovered that a viable alternative could have been buying a memory foam mattress topper. For a fraction of what I paid for the queen mattress, you could get the same sized topper for less than $300. I went with the mattress because of my bad back, but if health concerns are minimal for you, look in to the memory foam mattress topper option. It could be a smart money choice.
